Campus Living vs. Off Campus Living

Housing at Michigan State University is estimated to be a little less than $8,000 a year. While students are  staying on campus and  others are fleeing away from campus, Val Meyer, associate director for MSU’s financial aid, said that students could potentially find themselves paying more when moving off campus. There are just so many options off campus, she said. People are going to have to move off campus, regardless, she explains because MSU just does not have enough space to house all 45,000 students. But we still have to consider what, potentially, is the driving force of students staying, and those who are leaving. Students are steadily deciding what is better, living on campus or moving off campus. “It could be less expensive for them to live off campus or it could be more expensive,” Meyers said. It just depends on the student. What are you most comfortable with?

Campus Living vs. Off Campus Living

Students at Michigan State University are contemplating whether or not they want to stay on campus. For many students, staying on campus is a lot more costly. Some students are complaining that they don't get the freedom they desire staying on campus. While others simply want to just get away from MSU! Students are finding that over the summer, they sublease apartments and actually get used to living on their own. Many students feel that on campus living is “getting old”, and others feel that the food is “getting even older.” Many students are hearing of the hype of moving off campus, while others are considering the benefits of remaining on campus. Some students feel safer staying on campus. Some students are content with the cafĂ© food that they are eating every day. But who’s to say that either is better?

Experts have a Different Outlook on Weather Change

While college students are concerned with the effects that weather change have on their lives, experts are more concerned with why the weather is changing so rapidly. Experts are becoming more concerned with global warming. “Climate change cannot be stopped,” said Dr. Ken Dewey, a professor of climatology at the University of Nebraska, in a youtube video. People need to adapt and use climate change as the opportunity to jump forward into new areas of technology, Dewey said. Dr. Tinus Pulles, Editor in Chief of Greenhouse Gas Measurement and Management, also believes that it is extremely difficult to respond to the extreme effects of climate change. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Great Lakes region is affected by dramatic weather conditions for three main reasons; masses of air from other regions, the geographic conditions, and the Great Lakes and their “moderating influence”, which was stated in the article Why Does Michigan Weather Change So Rapidly, as well. Knute Nadelhoffer, a professor of ecology and environmental biology at the University of Michigan, said greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels are changing the region's weather and ecosystem according to the University of Michigan website. Could weather change be a warning?

College Students Unpleased with Michigan Weather

College students at Michigan State University are not so pleased with the drastic weather changes going on in Michigan. Michigan weather, just two weeks ago temperature was as high as 90 degrees. However, in the previous weeks has dropped into low 70s and 60 degree weather with rainy days. Students are being affected in numerous ways. Some students have to work in this drastic changing weather, and are scared that they may become sick while other students are mad that its just not the “summer weather” they expected. While many of these students are looking the affects of the weather change to their life, they aren’t really taking in account, why the weather is changing so drastically. Global warming is the reason according to experts. But, some students aren’t really concerned with that; they just want it to be nice out again.  Wonder what the forecast is like this week?

While Many Students are Leaving, Some are Staying as Well

While there are many students who are deciding to flee away from Michigan, others are finding job opportunities here and sticking around. Some students who are headed to graduating from colleges across the state and deciding what's next, staying in Michigan is definitely in their plans. Some students are deciding to stick around for many reasons such as career opportunities, being closer to family and some people enjoy the weather and change of seasons of Michigan. Though "Michigan has had a bad decade," there has still been some increase of change, Charles Ballard, a Michigan State Professor and expert in economics said. Some students feel it is important to stick around and build up cities, like Detroit, so that they can become more vibrant. The city of Detroit, downtown specifically, is engaging in a build up as well, tearing down old and building up new. Could this be the first step to getting more people moving back than many more moving away?

Graduate Students Are Leaving Michigan

Students that are graduating from college are not so sure about staying in Michgan. Many students are trying to go somewhere else because they feel that job opportunities in Michigan are lacking. Though many students are convinced that their main reason for leaving is due to the fact that they are looking for better jobs, Michgan State University Professor and expert in Economics, Charles Ballard, believes that saying that is the only reason misses the main point. He beleives that students are beginning to leave out of the state to travel to places with urban cores. "Young people are not just looking for jobs, they're looking for recreational and other things as well," Ballard said. According to the Michigan Spotlight website, there are 44% of students leaving the state to find employment. It has also been recognized that many other students are leaving for weather/climate reasons. And other students are leaving, just because, Ballard said.
